Feminist reboot of Charmed

I think they would go for three P names, or three similar names (like three names on S or something), but I don't think they would use the same names and the same dynamics between the sisters. 🙂 I think they'd want it to feel more fresh and new than that.

Yeah, in the final seasons they kind of didn't care about their own "no magic for self-gain" rule anymore and kind of constantly abused magic, and indicated that their book of magic was just one of many... They kind of set up the spin off there themselves really.

The Craft is great, I agree. Not sure how it would have worked as a show, but I'm really curious at what might have been.

I would hope so myself but from what I heard anything possible .

I agree & while at first they were just 3 witches toward the end there was so many players going around it was a bit confusing .

The thing I would have really liked about the series was how did they hide the fact they witches since they still in High School.

The Charmed sisters were all grown up & had a big mansion to do things in so they were able to hide it really easy .

I won't join the choir and reject modern feminism.

However, I do believe it is stupid to set out to make a feminist show. Feminism, like all ideological theories, is an abstraction and an ideal. No person can be a perfect feminist, just like you cannot be a perfect philanthropist. A good feminist show must be made somewhat by accident by someone who is excited about telling women's stories. If you set out to deliberately make a feminist show, you are going to get something that is sterile and lifeless and that will ultimately fail at what it aspires to.

I have always felt that artistic creation and artistic criticism should be kept separate. Feminism belongs to the field of criticism. It is we as viewers and critics that should decide if a creative work aligns with our values or not. It is often more interesting when it doesn't than when it does.

I love your take on this!
Agreed . If you try & make a feminist show it going to be something that only the creators think is one since everyone has a different idea . What would be better is try & make a great show & hope it comes out feminist as well . At least that what I think .

It’s been ages since I saw this show but one thing I vaguely remember about the Cole thing that didn’t bother me as much is at least the fall out of the relationship was focused on Phoebe and her coping with the destruction - not, at least in great lengths, Cole. So that was tolerable.

They did seem to focus a lot on the relationships they were having . At least as far as I remember .

The cole/phoebe's thing was so badly executed. Cole was about to kill his demonic side and then Phoebe came, killed Snyder and became the queen of the underworld. She took away the choice from him. And after that of course she destroyed him with her sisters. It was not fair for cole. It's Phoebe's faut !!

To be fair, she's pregnant with the Source of All Evil at that point so, much like Cole for the season, she was somewhat under that influence and not really in full control of her faculties.

I disagree she wasn't under the influence of her son at this time, this will come later

Well, she's throwing fire at that point, which is a Source power, so I'd argue that the baby pretty much started influencing her from conception. Phoebe's always been susceptible to darkness but turning fully Darkside is not something I personally believe she would have done without the influence of the baby.

Maybe you're right, that's debatable. But my point is I still think she acted selfishly by killing "Snyder the wizard" , prevent Cole to save himself, become queen of the underworld, and then killed him for something he didn't want and didn't do. That was her choice and I believe she wasn't at that time under the influence of her son because if she really was, her behavior are no sense for me. She would not try to save innocent and not kill demon like she did, she woudn't return to her sisters, she woudn't have killed Cole. All of this prove she was in full control of her abilities

When I say she was under the influence of the baby/fetus, I don't mean that it was mind-controlling her or even in complete control of her person, hence the conflict she had and her trying to return to her sisters and the struggle to choose between them and Cole. What I mean is that she was literally carrying the Source of All Evil and that influenced her at least partially (plus we know that the Seer was feeding her a potion to increase the strength/power of the baby/fetus which would have affected Phoebe too) and made her more susceptible to evil and to committing evil.

I agree that the whole storyline was handled clumsily/badly, it's true that Cole never asked to be the Source (the Seer manipulated everything) but he had been evil in the past and had tried to kill Phoebe and her sisters multiple times and the natural conclusion to his story would be for Phoebe to vanquish him. But they definitely messed it up by having Phoebe be the one to intervene and essentially take him back to the Darkside. Just clumsy writing all around.

Given what Antho and RachM have just said to each other I am hoping there is a reboot of the show really quickly.

The show has its flaws but it also has its good points and, forgive the pun, lots of charm. The reboot won't fix any of the issues with the old series because it's not a continuation of the series nor does it have anything to do with the canon of the original show. So, in theory, it will just produce new problems and will only annoy fans of the old show.

As I said before, it would be better if they just gave it a completely different name and admitted that the only reason it's being connected to Charmed in any way is to try and bait viewers.

I tend to give the series more credit than most, I do think it's much frothier and more frivolous than the average tv show but, like I said in a previous post, it has a lot of heart and I really love the characters. Also, there are a handful of episodes which are actually really well-written and deeper than the average ep (Morality Bites, Death Takes A Halliwell, A Paige From The Past, P3H20, Charmed Again, Murphy's Luck) and some really hilarious episodes which are just tonnes of fun (Chick Flick, She's A Man Baby! A Man, Sense & Sense Ability, The Truth Is Out There And It Hurts, Which Prue Is It Anyway?).

While the show doesn't have the same development, depth and mythos as, say, BtVS, it definitely gives good focus to the characterisation of the girls, develops their relationships with one another well and doesn't take itself too seriously. I tend to get very defensive of Charmed because I feel that people look down on it a lot but it's honestly one of my favourite shows.

I definitely agree, I love Charmed too but for me there are many inconcistencies in this show and there is that awful season 8. I also think Charmed's seasons lack of a true, badass big bad

I agree, there wasn't a lot of cohesion between the seasons and there are a lot of plot holes in the later seasons. Also, an established Big Bad definitely would have been nice.

Charmed has a lot of stand-alone which isn't necessary a bad thing, many shows are like that, but for a fantasy show I think the construction 1 season = 1 big bad is a good idea. In Buffy, it's the case, we have :
Season 1 : Master
Season 2 : Spike/Drusilla/Angelus
Season 3 : The Mayor/Faith
Season 4 : Initiative
Season 5 : Gloria
Season 6 : Trio/Dark Willow
Season 7 : The First/Caleb
We have a general plot with a big bad for all seasons and I think it's a good construction for a show like that. Charmed should have done the same things, and not :
Season 1/2/3 : I honestly don't see who is the BIG BAD in all of theses seasons. I heard the name of the source but until season 4 she isn't really there. I guess you could say Cole or the Triad were the big bad of season 3 but the fact is the second one weren't present enough and the first one fell in love with Phoebe, so not really a big bad.
Season 4 : The source is definitely the big bad but come on it is the source of all the evil, it should be the BIG big bad of the show, not only of the season.
Season 5 : again, no real big bad
Season 6 : Gideon, and this is my favorite season. Love absolutely all the stuff with Chris and Wyatt
Season 7 : Zankou, I like him but I think he could have be more mean and powerful
Season 8 : Billie and Christy : well not a fan of season 8, really not a fan !

While I think a Big Bad per season would definitely have helped the series overall, especially in term of themes and cohesion, I think maybe the reason that there wasn't a Big Bad for the first few seasons was that, even though the show was supernaturally themed, that was never the focus of the show. The series was originally about three sisters who just happened to be witches, whereas the later seasons became about witches who just happened to be sisters. As such, the early seasons focus more on the sisters' relationships and their individual arcs and journeys, as opposed to their supernatural powers and the forces they went up against, which I think worked to a certain extent.

Season 3 : The Mayor/Faith
Season 4 : Initiative
Season 5 : Gloria

Season 7 : The First/Caleb

The Master wasn't that good of a Big Bad. Can't really call Spike+Dru the big bad, but Angelus was perfect. Faith wasn't the Big Bad, the Mayor was, he was good, but not really great. The Initiative wasn't the big bad, it was Adam. He was good. Gloria was good. Dark Willow and The First sucked as big bads. So Buffy really only had three big bads that actually affected and effected her. Three in seven years. I would never say that Buffy is known her it's big bads.

The series was originally about three sisters who just happened to be witches,
And that's why it didn't need big bads. It wasn't the same kind of show. But that's also why I thought the theme and tone of the show was different that it was.

I think myself that the Mayor was a great big Bad . Buffy & her friends knew where he was but couldn't attack him .
