Ever read something that depresses you so much, you just feel like going to bed even though it's the middle of the evening?

Here I was, psyched because it's only a 3-day week and the holidays are coming up, and then I read reboot news and I just feel like going to bed until it's over. 🙁

As I said, Warner Bros. is not interested in driving Buffy DVD sales for Fox. They're hoping their version will be the New Hotness, and Joss's version will be dismissed as "old school" by everybody under 30 and forgotten about.

That's business.

This won't be *his* main character, either. It will be a character named Buffy who kills vampires, completely defined by someone else.

They shouldn't have to be interested in 'driving' BtVS DVD sales for Fox... And again, why do you keep saying they're hoping to dismiss Joss' version? Their goal is probably just the usual, which is making as much money as they can with it. I also honestly can't see how Joss's version could ever be considered 'old school'.

He's said repeatedly that he got no studio interest in doing a movie continuation or companion to BtVS. He couldn't even get that "Ripper" TV movie made. No, he doesn't have the rights, but Fox has always been smart enough to know that Buffy is Joss's baby. They give him complete creative control over the story. (As in the season 8 comics).

Vampires are much more in right now, though. 😉

I'm not burning it because I think it will be bad... I have no idea whether it will be a good movie or not from an objective standpoint. I think it's wrong to make any Buffy movie, good or bad, against Joss's will and without his input. There is nothing worthwhile about the character that didn't come from his writing or guidance.

Well, I'll agree that it's kind of a low blow. But they have the right to do it, since he doesn't have the *legal* rights on Buffy. And it's not because nothing worthwhile about the character came out from elsewhere than him in the past that it couldn't happen at some point. Also, not everything Joss did with Buffy is that acclaimed. Take the comics for example... Not only positive reactions from the fanbase I can tell you!

I also honestly can't see how Joss's version could ever be considered 'old school'.

The show has been off the air for 7 years now. Already, today's high school and college kids remember it as a show their parents used to watch. Give them a new version with CGI and 3-D and seizure-inducing camera work and maybe a soundtrack with auto-tuned divas, and they'll forget all about Joss's version.

Also, not everything Joss did with Buffy is that acclaimed. Take the comics for example... Not only positive reactions from the fanbase I can tell you!

Joss is awesome a lot of the time. Good a lot of the time. Not so good occasionally. But it's all part of the kick-ass whole that is the Jossverse. It's the real deal.

For better or worse, Buffy lives inside Joss's head, and nowhere else. I will accept no impostors.

I'm in college, and back in school Buffy was cool, so not parent generation, today's college kids are still the Buffy generation
I didn't think Joss sounded too bitter. Sure, a little bit, but he's also very self-deprecating (LOL @ the Avengers and Batman comment 😀 😀). Classic Joss. I think he just accepts that this is part of the industry. And let's face it- he's been screwed over enough by the networks and execs to realize this. Not that the guy isn't to blame for his own failures (since I think a lot of people use the 'networks suck' line to defend Joss wayyy too much), but this is just how things are sometimes.

And bleh, like I was saying before. I don't mind this new take on Buffy, especially since this new writer sounds interesting. I'd just be really pissed off if this shiner and sexier version gets more recognition than the TV series for no other reason than that it's new and flashy. That'll be annoying as hell.

Is it terrible of me to I hope the movie will be a smashing success just to make Joss mad? 😀

For better or worse, Buffy lives inside Joss's head, and nowhere else. I will accept no impostors.

You are not a big fan of fanfiction, are you? 🙂

Roven added: "There is an active fan base eagerly awaiting this character's return"¦

The fan base wants the original cast & characters back, not new actors who share the same names as old characters but nothing more. Stoopid idea to me. I'd rather them just make a Brenda The Vampire Slayer movie or something about a new Slayer than to rip off THE Slayer.

Amber Benson's thoughts:

Apparently, they're rebooting 'Buffy' w/out Joss Whedon: I told him that asking to play the title role would frighten the Studio Execs
.

I love her even more now 🙂

Juliet Landau:

Buffy movie reboot without Joss. So uncool. 🙁

Ya know what kiddies, I ain't worried about it.
A new Buffy movie certainly wouldn't do any significant damage to the series in any way that I can envision.

Look at that crap American "Godzilla" movie they made a few years ago. As a fan of all the old Godzilla movies, I didn't really enjoy it, but for me it's existence in the world didn't ruin the *true* G-films. It was just a novelty to be viewed and taken for what it was.

Let the new movie happen. Watch it if you wish, or no. But do not fear it. It's just another Hollywood flick to either be enjoyed or dismissed, and then allowed to pass into memory. The BtVS series is always going to be there.

Sorry, but I'm still worried, although some of you made good points. For me, I'm very skeptical of the movie if Joss isn't somewhat involved and/or SMG doesn't play Buffy. It's like having another actor besides Harrison Ford play Indiana Jones or George Lucas not being involved in the Star Wars franchise. It's simply ridiculous. The TV series made Buffy an iconic and timeless character because of Joss' creativity and what SMG brought to the character. So, I can't see anyone else other than SMG play Buffy.

Spot on as usual, love!
It just annoys me that the only thing they really own is the character name and basic concept. Which is nothing, without the characterisation. Well, nothing except marketing. It's just so obviously a crass marketing decision. The original movie has NO fanbase. The occasional person might enjoy it, but the BB sure as hell wouldn't be here without the show. So what they're doing is effectively stealing all the goodwill and brand loyalty built up by Joss and the cast of the show, while not even remaking that story.

Like someone said before, it's not Buffy. It's a character named Buffy. And I feel it's a disgusting violation of Joss' work and creativity. Sure, it's technically legal, but it's a spit in the face. If he'd signed off on it, sure. Go ahead. It'd probably be seven shades of awful, but at least you've got permission from the guy who made the brand. But if you're just going to piggyback not only on the Vampire trend (that ended approximately 2 years ago, btw) but on someone else's name? Well, that just says to me that you're not creative enough to write something that you feel stands on its own to feet.

And if you can't do that, why the hell do you expect me to pay for it?

There is some great fanfic out there. There is some utterly abysmal fanfic out there. Difference is, no-one will charge me to read it. No-one will actually try and make me believe that their story is anything more than paying homage. That is what a fan's response is. If you want to tell a story of a sassy, relevant, female action heroine, do it yourself. If you want to tell a story of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, tell a story of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. They're kind of mutually exclusive, cause Buffy already exists. Hell, Buffy is still going. Why don't you try making a film about Harry, the sassy, relevant boy wizard. I'm sure there's a fan base for that kind of thing, right? It's BOUND to work out.

I don't know if you guys have seen this, but this is what Joss Whedon have to say about it :

After Warner Bros. announced the reboot of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," someone was eventually going to ask Joss Whedon about the franchise reboot without his involvement.

Whedon would provide a Whedonesque answer with honesty and humor about the announcement.

Here is Whedon's e-mail to E! Online:

I'm glad you asked for my thoughts on the announcement of Buffy the cinema film. This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths"”just because they can't think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself.

Obviously I have strong, mixed emotions about something like this. My first reaction upon hearing who was writing it was, "Whit Stillman AND Wes Anderson? This is gonna be the most sardonically adorable movie EVER." Apparently I was misinformed. Then I thought, "I'll make a mint! This is worth more than all my Toy Story residuals combined!" Apparently I am seldom informed of anything. And possibly a little slow. But seriously, are vampires even popular anymore?

I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death. But, you know, AFTER. I don't love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I'm also well aware that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly. I can't wish people who are passionate about my little myth ill. I can, however, take this time to announce that I'm making a Batman movie. Because there's a franchise that truly needs updating. So look for The Dark Knight Rises Way Earlier Than That Other One And Also More Cheaply And In Toronto, rebooting into a theater near you.

Leave me to my pain!

Sincerely,

Joss Whedon

Post 64.
But wait wasn't there only like 8 years between the "old" Batman and the "new"? So it's actually sorta similar really.

But that was 8 years of inactivity. They weren't still making new Batman stuff when Batman Begins came out. Joss has had Season 8 going for something like 2 years, and has Season 9 in the pipeline. Plus, I'm pretty sure the original creators of Batman have always either signed off, or even been involved in its many iterations over the years. This is why ALL of Batman is available in each new film. They can choose any character to bring back, any villain to revile, any sidekick to re-imagine. This is different, it's swiping the Buffy name (and only that) out from under Joss.

By "they", I mean Burton/Schumacher etc. Not that there was NO Batman stuff. But it was all endorsed.

Good points Bree, but to be honest, I wouldn't feel bad for SMG if some other actress took the role and got popular with it. After all, she has shown little interest in pursuing the legacy of her iconic character.

True, but then why make a movie without SMG? If something's isn't broke, don't fix it.
People making comparisons between the Buffy franchise and the Batman or Spider Man or whatever franchises should take note that those comic book stories were intended from the start to be passed from one writer and artist to the next. They were never intended to be one person's vision. It's not like Bob Kane thought DC would never let anybody else but him touch the Batman story.

My prediction is that Joss will now decide to move on and put an end to his version of the Buffy story. I think he'll hand over his outline for the season 9 comics, and then have no further involvement in it or Buffy again. She will die in some heroic and permanent way at the end of it, and that will be it, except for whatever crappy fake version of Buffy: Full Throttle the studios want to keep doing.

But wait wasn't there only like 8 years between the "old" Batman and the "new"? So it's actually sorta similar really.

People keep comparing it to Batman and Star Trek. They're not fair comparisons. Batman was conceived in 1939 & has had many reincarnations (comics, TV shows, multiple movies). That's 71 years of Batman. Star Trek debuted on TV in 1966, spawned several spin-off TV shows and multiple movies. That's 44 years of Star Trek, 43 yrs before the re-boot in 2009. Let's talk Superman: created in 1932, some would say that Smallville is a reimagining, and it happened in 2001.

Batman and Superman, and maybe to a much lesser extent Star Trek, are iconic, & have become more of the property of the collective culture as a whole.

In contrast, the Buffy movie debuted in 1992, but the show (that was the real Buffy to most fans & popular culture) started in 1997. A mere 13 years ago. I'll repeat what I've said ad nauseum: that simply is not enough time for a reboot, IMHO of course. The whole thing is a stupid attempt to cash in on the vampire phenomenon. FWIW, I also think a SpiderMan reboot this close to the other movies is stupid and unnecesary as well.

Here's a good Time blog from this morning (that says it a helluva lot better than I can!):
Ain't That a Stake in the Heart: Warner Rebooting Buffy... Without Whedon
Posted by James Poniewozik

From the Oh, This Will Definitely Work Dept.: Warner Bros. is planning a reboot Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie—without the involvement of Joss Whedon, who wrote the script of the original Buffy movie and was the creative force behind the seven-season series on The WB.

And just in case you're thinking this is one of those amicable deals, where Whedon hands off the series with his blessing, it's not. From the funny, resigned e-mail reaction he sent to E! Online: "I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death. But, you know, AFTER. I don't love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I'm also well aware that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly."

So let's look at the reasons this is a bad idea. Which may not be the ones you'd first think.

First, I don't automatically assume the movie will be bad. It would seem pretty much a jerk move, made in the spirit of "Hey, look around and see what vampire crap we own the rights to, I hear the kids are eating that up right now." But I'm a strong believer that these things are all about execution. I can't see any way that a new creative team could make the same Buffy that Whedon would, but—just as with any reimagining, Batman, Star Trek, &c.—it's entirely possible that someone could rethink the premise in a way that works. (Whedon himself admits that he attempted to do the same with The Avengers, not that that is a direct comparison.)

Or it could be absolutely God-awful. That we won't know until the movie gets made, if it does.

That said, I can't think of any good reason that Buffy needs to get rebooted, especially so close to its having gone off the air (and having lived on in graphic novels). Is there really some creative purpose, some paradigm of the '90s-to-mid-'00s that needs to be rethought from the drastically changed perspective of the early '10s? See: "Look around and see what vampire crap we own," above.

Indeed, I have to admit that my first reaction when I heard the news was that I was glad Whedon was not involved. I loved Buffy—even the much-maligned later-period Buffy, especially season 6—but I feel like Whedon has said his creative piece there. (He may well disagree; I don't know.) He's since gone on to make Firefly, Dollhouse and Dr. Horrible, and I would much rather he continued making new creative statements. Frankly I would rather everyone in Hollywood focused on, you know, actually coming up with original ideas for a change.

But moral and artistic questions aside, the way Warner is approaching this—with what, to the public eye anyway, seems like a big screw-you to Whedon—seems like the dumbest way imaginable of executing what is a questionable idea to begin with. Namely: whose genius idea was it to relaunch Buffy by alienating essentially every devoted Buffy fan on the planet? (Perusing Twitter, fan sites and blog comments, I literally have yet to find one with a good word to say about the move.)

Now here's the thing: sometimes it can be a good idea to alienate fans of an old franchise—or, at least, to demonstrate independence from them. A creative project can only flourish if it's not beholden to re-creating the vision of some past artist, and if you have a figure who's become archetypal—Superman, say—you're not going to do well by trying to please the pickiest sticklers for consistency with the original comics.

But Buffy is not Superman, or Batman or, sorry, even Star Trek. That is to say, it is not a mass franchise with a huge potential audience of casual fans in addition to the hard core. You have Buffy fans, and then you have people who didn't watch it, think of it as some vampire movie/series with a silly name, and possibly remember that the guy from Bones was in it. And Buffy fans are specifically Joss Whedon fans, in a way that Star Trek fans are not—not to a person, that is—Gene Roddenberry fans. Might be a good idea to find a way of making the movie without flipping him off, you think?

It's become a movie-biz truism in the Comic-Con, fanboy/girl-ingratiation era that you can build a larger audience for a cult property by starting from the fan base. But tick them off, and I'm guessing you're left with a potential audience of about five people for this movie. Perhaps there is some Hollywood logic by which this idea works, but it seems to me that Warner has put its foot in its Hellmouth.
