should i watch angel?

i’ve finished buffy years ago, but have constantly been contemplating whether or not i should watch Angel..

i really hated him as a character, i found him really bland and boring. so that put me off of watching angel.

i do have all the dvds, however, as i found the whole box set at a thrift store for $2!! so maybe i should give them a watch… i dont know though.

does it add to the actual plot of buffy at all? like is it important to watch angel? will i be missing out on extra plot for buffy tvs?
 
There isn't a great deal of Buffy crossover but the show is worth watching even if you hate Angel. I hate the character but Cordelia, Wesley, Fred, Gunn, and Lorne are all great characters that do a lot of the heavy lifting for the bland, creepy, whiny protagonist.

Angel grows into one of the best characters in the verse on his own show, he's a different person when he gains his own life, circle of friends and identity in LA and that's part of the story. It's a great show so you should watch it but it doesn't really add to Buffy much.
 
It's a great show, and DEFINITELY worth watching.There's a few Buffy references, but I'm not going spoil it for you.
 
I agree that it doesn't really add much to Buffy, but it's totally worth watching. Angel himself aside, there are some really awesome characters in the show. Some fans actually like AtS better than BtVS...not sure how I feel when comparing the two, because I enjoy both, but I don't hate Angel either, so...I guess make of all that what you will.
 
Okay, do you like Batman? Because, if you like Batman, you'll find something to like about Angel. If you don't, then, at the very least, watch the crossover episodes in the first season. Otherwise, Angel is way too weird to answer that question.
 
ahhh thank you guys!! maybe i will turn on the dvd player and attempt to watch at least the first season. first i need to finish how i met your mother though!!
 
I would say that Angel is a better character once you remove him from being around Buffy.

I'd also say the same about Spike.

So much so that I consider "The Girl in Question", where they're both after Buffy again, to be one of the worst in the series.

And make sure you watch "She". For the 'dancing.'
 
Once the VHS went out of circulation i only ever had Buffy on DVD up until around 2014. Only got Angel after my mum accompanied me in a rewatch and suggested we should watch Angel as well.
 
I generally wasn't much of a fan of Angel on Buffy's show (though I didn't hate him), but I came to like him a lot more on his own show. He's far more interesting as his own character rather than "Buffy's love interest." (The spinoff even made a few momentary parodies of Angel and Buffy together.)

I don't know what you'd think of Angel, but he's different there. Not contradictory different (a few thoughtless retcons, but struck me as minor, easily explained away, and no worse than the retcons within BTVS itself), but showing who he is without Buffy to define him. I personally thought Faith was far more interesting, as well as one other whose name I don't want to mention.

You might not care for him in his own show either, but it should be for different reasons. And there are still the other characters.

I'd say give the first episode a chance. If it doesn't grab you then it may not be for you (or needs some time to grow on you).

Though I watched the first ep myself (and liked it, but not those immediately after, and some random samplings of later eps didn't make enough sense for me to follow as I lacked the context of what was going on), and was years later before I watched the series, which I only did because others with me were watching. Then I loved it. I like it better than BTVS in some ways.

Yeah, normally I would say watch the pilot and "key episodes" that definitely reflect what the series will become, but Angel is so inconsistent. It's not really a detective show with MOTW, it's not really "Darkness, you don't know anything about darkness, you couldn't last five minutes in my world (flips coin) say, want to go to magical fantasy world?" It's not Friends in a hotel, it's not Suites with vampires.

No, nobody here is stupid enough to suggest anything from season 4 as your first episode. And I like S4.

Angel only really exists because Buffy and David were really popular in 1998-2005. The creators didn't really have much of a vision outside life as a young adult in LA in the mid 90s, and I strongly suspect that "vision" was just something Joss made up on the way to the studio to pitch Angel. So, yeah, it's been called Batman, Batman works. But it's really hard to explain the series.

The only thing that really seemed Batmany to me where when he had the dual-stake quick releases on his wrists and using the grappling hook gun. Which both were ubercool, but both were just one-off items, for the most part. It was more Forever Knight (which he stole basically the whole concept and came out nearly a decade earlier) than Batman.

aha thanks for the luck 😭 managed to find it.. hasnt been used since i was 15. thank god i spend my free time building computers and all that jazz. finally came in handy for once!! managed to fix the dvd player, and started watching angel. then turns out the dvd was scratched. yayy!! went out to the thrift store to try find another dvd, and to my luck, i found the whole of season 1!! now i will start watching it. maybe my repent bad luck spell worked!!
