Sharing the Bangel love...

Can I just share my favorite quote that never happened? I wish they hadn’t cut this from Darla.

Yeah I think it’s implied what he means in the episode still?
Eh, I actually like the wording in the final episode better. Angel says everything he needs to implied here. A lot of that is repetitious to the point where it loses its impact. Angel is always a man of succinct speech that says a lot in few words (makes the big philosophical, existentialist speeches even more powerful). David tended to edit down his scripted lines even further by paraphrasing out extra wordiness (you'll notice this as you read scripts). Pronouns tend to disappear, which makes his sentences quite short.

The schoolgirl comment (also a reference to the Catholic schoolgirl outfit she wore to mock him), in particular, says it all about Darla's jealousy over Angel's relationship with Buffy. This link is further shown when post-coital Darla uses the exact words Buffy used when Angelus pretended to be Angel in the bedroom scene with the obvious insult to her being that Buffy lost Angel his soul through perfect happiness, while soulless Darla could only bring him perfect despair.

And this isn't to take away from Darla at all. I think Angel did actually love Darla a lot when she was willing to die a natural death and especially when she gave her life for the only son he'd ever have. Angel was the one who showed her what it was to feel cared about for the first time through Angel's extreme act of sacrificial love combined with desperation to prove that someone as wretched as himself could be saved (The Trial), which is something she emulated when she was able to love someone more than herself for the first time (Lullaby). And Buffy (nor Cordy) will never take the place of Darla as Connor's mother. Connor is the love of Angel's life.

I really don't like when other ships are undermined in order to prop a ship up, and this includes Bangel. Yes, Angel loved Buffy more than anything and no other woman will mean as much to him as she did. But he also loved Darla and had (IMO) a deeper connection with Darla than he did with Buffy (through her being his sire and the mother of his child) and I never liked that AtS tried to (mildly) pit Darla against Buffy, so I'm very glad that the above dialogue was cut. People can have many loves in their life, many great romances and connections, none of which should undermine one another.

Amen to that.
@Ceadsearc03 - I had no idea this was the original dialogue! Wow. It's actually a little clunky so I'm kinda glad it didn't make the final cut as well but as you all say I think the implication is there nevertheless. But thank you so much for sharing this! I love to see those cut lines as it helps inform the writer's intent in the scene. I have always been of the opinion that Angel was never 'in love' with Darla, that was just my take away from the show. I do think he has a very strong connection with her and desires but I don't think he was capable of love without a soul (Same as I don't think any soulless vamp was) and I never saw any indication that he fell in love with her after he regained his soul. He certainly had a long history with her, felt deep empathy for her, and their connection cannot be understated.

I know this is super off topic for this thread but since it's mostly dead I'll go with it. I really like how they use Angel's feelings for Buffy in the Dear Boy scene because it really showcases Darla's lack of understanding of what loving something means. Darla thinks what she and Angel had when they were soulless was love. But I do believe Angel when he tells Buffy that he has never loved someone in his 243 years, and that is because he could not fully grasp what love was until he had a soul. Darla doesn't understand this YET. And then - she does! In Lullaby:

Darla: "I love it completely. I-I-I don't think I've ever loved anything as much as this life that's inside of me."
Angel: "Well - you've never loved anything, Darla."
Darla: "That's true. Four hundred years and I never did - till now. - I don't know what to do."

And I have always found this such a powerful line for a hundred different reasons but mostly because in the journey of Darla and Angel I think she comes to a place of understanding. For the first time she understands what love is. And this is the moment I find that they are the closest to each other. In a mutual understanding of what loving someone so deeply means.

Thanks again for posting @Ceadsearc03! The bangel forum has been very quiet. I hope you will feel welcome to post more Bangely goodness 😉

I feel like I should clarify that I don't think that Angel and Darla loved one another when they were soulless but I do believe that there are two points in time where Angel loves Darla (whether or not it's a romantic love is up for interpretation). The first is the end of The Trial, when Darla accepts her fate and tells Angel that she felt how much he cared "the way no one ever cared before" and he sits next to her and comforts her. The second is when she is about to dust herself and she tells him that their child is the only good thing they did, and he kisses her fingers and comforts her.

I always thought that the confrontation in Dear Boy was supposed to show how Darla's soul was affecting her (although the interpretation that it's supposed to show that she didn't understand love is interesting); as a soulless monster she wouldn't have cared about Angel loving Buffy (no one quote the BtVS episode Angel at me because Darla isn't a fully-realised character at that point and is therefore written somewhat OOC, I mean, Darla with guns? Please) but as a human she is greatly upset at the notion that Angel didn't love her, because as a human her feelings for him are different and she believes that what they had was love. It shows that, even though she won't admit it, her soul is affecting her and her feelings for Angel are changing, making her more susceptible to emotions like jealousy.

IMO, Angel loved both Buffy and Darla, in different ways and at different points in his life, and I don't think his love for either woman undermines the other; he has deep connections with both women and I would class them as the two most important women in his life.

I agree with the not undermining other ships, but I feel like it was relevant at the time, if that makes sense. This was before Angel and Darla had really reconnected (as opposed to Vamp Darla and Angelus) IIRC (of course it’s been forever since I’ve seen AtS so maybe I’m just forgetting timeline) so I think it made sense in the context of that time.

I don’t know that I agree that Darla and Angel had a stronger connection (at least, at that time), but that’s just a personal opinion.

That said, I do agree with @MrsGordo that it ultimately was kind of clunky, and from reading the shooting script they really massively rewrote a LOT of the script from the original before it aired (and probably for the better) but as a Bangel shipper I still love the implication.

Well, I think I just agree with this all 100%! Lol.

And can I just say I’m so glad a Bangel forum even exists, all these years after the show ended?! I was sort of afraid Bangel fans would no longer exist!

I really don't like when other ships are undermined in order to prop a ship up, and this includes Bangel.

Agreed. A good ship should be able to stand on it's own two feet, not have to take out other ships in order to fly. Spuffy is a prime example of doing it. Sprusilla's break up in Lovers Walk was retconned to be all about Spuffy, despite the fact in Lovers Walk, it had nothing to do with that. Dru was pissed at Spike for his truce with Buffy, that's why she broke up with him, not because she saw him being in love with Buffy. Also, Dru was brought back literally just so Spike could reject her in favour of Spuffy, she served no other purpose.

None of the other BtVS ships did this:

Xanya didn't undermine Xandelia
Tillow didn't undermine Woz
Briley didn't undermine Bangel (even though Riley felt threatened by it, the show never felt then need to make Buffy choose one ship over the other)

Spuffy had to undermine Sprusilla because Sprusilla is the far superior ship. JM and JL had fantastic romantic chemistry, JM and SMG have great frenemy chemistry but the romantic chemistry always seemed a bit stilted (probably because JM and JL have similar acting styles where they would push each other whereas SMG insisted JM did things in a certain way). It's a good thing Angel was off doing his own show because just imagine the ship war that would emerge if the writers tried to push Spuffy whilst Angel was still on the scene.

I don't think he was capable of love without a soul (Same as I don't think any soulless vamp was)

I have to disagree with this. The whole "you can't love without a soul" is said by souled characters yet you have several soulless vampires going "actually we can". The only authority on what a soulless vampire feels is a soulless vampire. Whatever soulless vampires feel that they call love is real to them, a souled character can't really turn round and go "you're wrong" just because it doesn't match up to what they think love is. We see several vampire couples stick together for a long time, Spike and Drusilla didn't just cut each other loose when one was in a weakened state, they stayed around and looked after the weaker half despite there not really being a beneficial incentive of doing so, they did it because they loved each other.

In regards to Angel, who has been soulless and souled, I think the soul gives him the capacity to understand the sacrificial element of love eg doing what's right for someone else even if it doesn't benefit you in any way, such as Angel leaving town. Angel is then measuring love by the souled definition of it whereas the soulless vampires are measuring it by their own standards of what love is.

Therefore, both sides are right. Soulless vampires can feel love by their own standards whilst they can't by souled standards. It shouldn't be dismissed just because Buffy or whoever else decides it's not real. What soulless vampires feel is real to them.

Darla thinks what she and Angel had when they were soulless was love.

See above. Whatever Darla felt about Angelus/Angel was real to her, It might not be a souled standard of love, but it was love by vampire standards.

as a soulless monster she wouldn't have cared about Angel loving Buffy (no one quote the BtVS episode Angel at me because Darla isn't a fully-realised character at that point and is therefore written somewhat OOC, I mean, Darla with guns? Please) but as a human she is greatly upset at the notion that Angel didn't love her, because as a human her feelings for him are different and she believes that what they had was love. It shows that, even though she won't admit it, her soul is affecting her and her feelings for Angel are changing, making her more susceptible to emotions like jealousy.

I think vampire Darla was jealous about Angel loving Buffy because that is how she felt he felt about her once upon a time. She was hurt that Angel would fall in love with someone else, especially a slayer.

IMO, Angel loved both Buffy and Darla, in different ways and at different points in his life, and I don't think his love for either woman undermines the other; he has deep connections with both women and I would class them as the two most important women in his life

This is why Bangel and Dangel would be such the perfect genuine love triangle. It's not a case of "Who's Angel going to choose? Who does he like more?" because he has feelings for both women. Dangel have a long history and she is the mother of his child, whilst Bangel have a different kind of love that is pure and innocent. Both relationships have merits and both have drawbacks. Most important of all, it's not a competition between the two women to "win" Angel's heart which seems to be a trap most love triangles fall into.

I’m glad they cut that, I love Bangel but that feels like a line for fanfiction. It’s fine basically, but takes you out of the episode and Angel living his own life. It also feels rather forced.

(Also it hurts my love for Dangel 😋 He already killed Darla for Buffy, no need to rub salt in the wound! )

Can anyone else imagine Angel, if he got to raise Connor, signing his son up for an Ice Hockey little league and then going to watch all of Connor's matches?

Yes 🙂

This is a good point. I think I appreciate most what @Mrs Gordo pointed out, how the shooting scripts really give you more insight into the mindset. Like, I really like in the Enemies script when the writers point out that when Buffy has Angel chained up and she wakes up, he is looking at her lovingly.

And yes I can totally see the hockey thing. As long as the games are all at night. 😉

I agree, I like seeing stuff like that in shooting scripts, but can agree with it being cut :)
Not to downplay Dangel, but it just seems like the only woman Angel ever lost his soul to, for real, is Buffy. That just seems like Darla is #2 for Angel.

This is my issue with this video, Ms. Mojo picked Bangel, but still just couldn't help herself from mentioning Spuffy. I didn't see her doing that with the other couples....

She mentions Klaus&Caroline, Damon&Elena, Chuck&Blair, and Barney&Robin. She downplays Dan Humphrey, Ted Mosby, and Ross Geller. She doesn't mention Damon&Katherine, but props up Dullena.

Oh I think Darla is totally #2. I know not everyone agrees, but I feel like it’s a “maybe if things had been different” scenario, like maybe if she had come back human before Buffy or something. But as it was, Buffy was always #1 IMO.
Nothing big. But figured I'd share the Bangel Embrace collage I did. I couldn't decide which to use, so I uploaded two different versions.

On one hand, the top one shows them during their love affair seasons 1-3. Then we see them just as physically close 20 years later. lol

On the other hand, the bottom pic has an image of them embraced 20 years later in the collage column, and the pose fits more with the rest of the collage while being more different.

Some pix look very similar, but had some slight differences in pose and facial expression where it's not just the same pic over & over. lol These were ones I could find. I hope to find more Bangel promo embracing shots to thicken up the collage a bit more.
