The Spuffy Appreciation Thread

they needed to show us just how horrible of a person Spike could be--so HE knew how horrible of a person he could be and decide to do something about it.

Spike would realize that even with a chip, he was still a dangerous demon who could hurt...the girl he loves more than anything.

( I think the journey Spike goes on after it, shows how much Spike will go through for love, and for redemption...I think it's an amazing adding to the many sides of Spike's personlity 🙂 )

But as a Spike girl I can always find some weird way to justify all of Spike's acts 😉

Oh guys.. a thought just hit me.

How come the Bangel Appreciation thread is staked and ours isn't? Why is this? Is there a conspiracy at work here or are all the mods Bangels?

Umm... and off the Bangel/Spuffy war topic...

One thing I liked about Spuffy was how Spike loved and accepted all of Buffy and, in the end, she did the same for him. That's something we don't see much -- in fiction or in life. Usually, couples find ways to ignore, gloss over, excuse, or justify flaws in one another. First Spike and then, later, Buffy had the guts to love the worst as well as the best. I think that's a really hopeful message and actually kind of sweet in its own twisted kind of way (considering the kind of "worst" with which we're dealing, here, that is).

Do you think they should have made Spike attempt to bite Buffy rather than attempt to rape her? Why/why not?

Buffy obviously didn't see being bitten by a vampire, ANY vampire, as a pleasant experience, and if Spike had tried it she would have reacted the way any Slayer would: locate heart, insert stake. He's impulsive, not suicidal.

I was just reading some of JM's past Q&A's and found these two answers interesting. The first one is pretty much dead on, the second is just typical funny JM.

Do you ever feel that Buffy and Spike's relationship was somewhat unfinished? Needed closure?
I think thematically it did get closure. Spike really wasn't reformed after what happened in the bathroom - he seemed unworthy of her. By the end of the series they made him again worthy, but dead, trying for some tragic epic sweep I suppose. The problem I think, is that they didn’t want to spend much time on that - they needed the time to tell the story of the potentials so instead of doing something active I got to wear a jewel on a chain and blow up. It was the most time effective way to do it, but it lost something.

What do you think Buffy and Spike did that last night together?
I think Buffy tried to sleep with Spike but Spike wouldn't have her. He really didn't trust her. He said they should just be friends. (laughs!)

I'm going to have disagree with you there WA and direct to "Graduation Day part II". She may not want Spike biting her but she clearly really really likes when Angel does it.

As far as the stickyness of the Bangel thread goes, that has to do with the fact that I started it as part of the BB April's Fools joke this year with Buffy Summers. The joke was that Buffy relinquished control of the boards to me, the power went to my head and wackyness ensued😀 I tried to convert* (*read force) everyone to come down on the side of Bangel. It was all just part of joke...although I think the words Kean Nazi were thrown around a couple of times lol.

You better look at the expression on Buffy's face again, Miss K, She did what had to be done, but it scared the crap out of her. There wasn't any enjoyment connected to it
I just had a short revelation, but has it occured to anyone that Buffy and Angel is a relationship between a 15 year old girl and a 200something year old guy? (And even if you don't count the vampire years, how old was Angel when he became one, 26?) That is not very politically correct. (I should like that, I like politically incorrect. But it sort of annoys me)
And I would like to say something about the rape-thing: I'm gonna have to agree with the 'it's important for the story-line' thing. I mean, he could have tried to kill her but the beautiful thing about the rape (okay, that sounds weird) is that it is like, a perversion of his love for her. It is basically still his love that makes him do it and that's why it is good. And yea, the beautiful thing about their love (or whatever it is) is that she forgives him, even while he can't forgive himself.
And then some questions (I can't answer them completely cos I don't know all the episodes, their names and writers)

What are your top 5 Spike/Buffy scenes?
- Beneath you (Spike and Buffy in that chapel)
- Tabula Rasa
- The one where they bring the house down (Dirty girl ^^)
- The one where Willow's wishes come true (and they are getting married) But not just because the Spuffy thing, it was generally a very funny one.
- When she's kicked out of the house and he goes looking for her (s7)

Which season's Spike/Buffy do you like best?
-6. But I also like the more mature relationship they have in 7. And I like how very much they hate eachother in the beginning and how it slowly starts to change

Which of the show's writers do you think "got" Spike/Buffy the most?
-don't know, I guess every writer does something

Which of the show's writers do you think "got" Spike/Buffy the least?
-dunno

Which is your favourite Spike/Buffy kiss?
-Ah, the one where they bring the house down. How they go from fighting to kissing is just perfect. Soo passionate, Buffy denies it but this is imo what love (and particularly their love) is about: about being equals and all.

No there needed to be the attempt at rape. It was the clincher that made him get his soul. He was no longer evil to do that and not care, but thought he wasnt good enough and didnt love her enough that he would try it. Its fantastic writing!

I completely agree with this, but I wanted to add one thing. Thing with Spike and that whole attempted rape thing is that I really don't believe that it started off with him intentionally trying to rape her. I think it was just a very confusing situation for Spike. You have to remember what their relationship was like this season. She would treat him like complete shit one second then go to him for sex the next, and the sex itself was always pretty violent in nature. It was a never ending game with them of Buffy kinda resisting but always giving in or seeking him out. Spike was at that point still soulless so knowing limitations, not a strong point. And its not to make excuses for him, but he went to see her that day to apologize for the Anya fiasco, they talked and she kept giving him hope. She told him that she could never let Xander kill him, she point blank admitted to having feelings for him. Spike of course grasped on to that and he let his desperation take over, he thought if he could just make her "feel" again through sex, like they'd been doing all year, that she'd finally be able to give back and admit she loved him. As we all know it got WAY out of hand, but you can tell on his face immediately after Buffy manages to push him off that he realized what it had turned into, that he had been hurting her and that he didn't mean to. He instantly felt remorse even without a soul. And I think theres a lot to be said for that. And like FS said, "he was no longer evil enough to do that and not care", that's HUGE! He simply could not continue to live with himself as he was and risk his demon fully taking over causing something like that to happen again. And I think you can see in James acting in the scene in his crypt with James pacing and throwing the drink at the wall, all of these realizations going through his head... THAT is what lead him to seek out the soul.

As for biting her instead of the attempted rape, I don't think it would have worked at all. I see no motivation for an attempted bite. Biting would mean either killing her or turning her, and neither of those make sense. He wasn't at that place. His motivation in that scene was to get Buffy to see she loved him... desperation, yearning, thats why it worked so perfectly.

I totally agree, wish I could have said it like that.

Well said! That is exactly how I interpret that scene, as well.

If you look closely at the expression on Buffy's face during any one of the three times she was bitten (by the Master, by Angel, or by Dracula) or the single time in Season 7 when she thought Spike was about to bite her, there was NEVER even a slight impression of anything except pain and fear there. Remember, being turned, as established back in Season 2, was Buffy's worst nightmare. It didn't matter who was doing the biting, whether it was the Master trying to kill her, Angel draining, and almost killing, her to counteract the poison Faith had shot him with, or Dracula, who seemingly held her under some sort of thrall at the time, you could quite easily tell two things: the act of being bitten scared her, probably more than anything else in her whole life had, and it HURT.

It wasn't until later, when they needed to have Riley do something dangerous and really stupid, that the writers came up with the "humans let vampires bite them for the thrill" thing, and that was completely contradictory to everything that had been established about the vampire/"happy meal on wheels" relationship.

Joss on the GD2 Bite scene: "That was one of our thinner metaphors. That, ah, you know, that was really pretty close to the surface. But you know, those two people, you know, were so much in love that I thought it was a genuinely erotic scene, and not, you know, exploitive."

and as for Miss Gellar herself, this is what she had to say...

"When he bites her and she's writhing on the floor, in her full orgasm she breaks the table. They missed it. The most erotic thing I've ever seen on TV, and the censors missed it completely."

Well, I guess I'm right there with the censors then, because I missed anything erotic in the scene. Of course, I have heard a woman's orgasm referred to as a "little death," and since he dang near killed her...

But if that's the most erotic thing Sarah's ever seen on tv, she needs to go back and watch that balcony scene in "Dead Things." Now THAT was erotic, regardless of which ship you favor.

Keanoite agrees: Now now WA no need for sour grapes...lol

There's no sourness to my grapes, I can most certainly assure you. If that was their intention, though, I honestly missed it. All I saw was a very frightened girl having the life sucked out of her by the man she loved. (I still say that the balcony scene was more exciting than anything that ever happened between Buffy and Angel)

Ok, die hard Spuffy fan here, who has shipped Spuffy since S2, but even I saw the erotic in the Bangel bite scene.

God, I feel old.
Alright, I just now watched the Grad Day 2 bite scene and I have to say I'm torn about it. At first it really does look erotic, really erotic. Its the way they fall, the way Buffy crunches the metal helmet in her hand and curls up her leg and then lets it out to kick the table across the room... she does kinda look like she just had an orgasm... but then immediately after the kick she gets this eery frightened look on her face, like seriously deadly petrefied. That look almost cancels all the rest of it out. So I'm torn. Maybe it was a combination of both: pleasure at first followed by fear because he had taken too much and she could feel her life slipping away from her.

I see the eroticism in it. In Literature, A vampire bite is often a metaphore for sex and sexual power and as Joss said, this particular bite is a very thinly veiled representation indeed. I'm not sure if it a good thing for Buffy and Angel though - this bite shows the only way they can experience intimate pleasure together thanks to the curse.
