Did anyone else hate Dawn in this season?

As for some aspects of Dawn's behavior, I instantly headcanoned that to be how the monks (who had virtually no exposure to kids) ENVISIONED girls Dawn's age. Probably not what the writers had in mind, though.

I'm actually surprised by how many say that was them at her age. I cringe looking back on myself at 14, but I had so very little in common with Dawn emotion and behavior wise, and at times I even had a cousin a few years older than me I hung around with (along with his friends), but still not like how Dawn is with Buffy and the Scoobies.

But that said, I've known people old enough to be grandmothers (even were in some cases) who could express the same sort of emotional immaturity displayed there (and I've even seen things like eating in a clumsy way, but assumed meds, nerve damage, etc, and in some cases I know I was right).

But again, seeing Dawn as a ball of energy just recently shaped into the form of a human girl (and programmed) by monks who had little idea what girls that age were like (especially if they lived among people more medieval in culture), then I can see her manifesting that way. My headcanon is further that they gave her a soul (explaining behavior, how she was able to invite Harmony in, etc) to better HIDE the Key (more within the soul than the body), but with a soul then Dawn becomes a true intelligence (mago-synthetic?) able to learn and adapt, and thus escape the programming of the monks (by growing out of it).

That's a pretty plausible bit of headcanon work. It perfectly fits the situation. I could see that easily being adopted into the actual canonical writing. I see other options too, but this is very well-worked and logical.
 
They didn't edit the script to make Dawn the age she was playing 14 properly. She still seemed like a kid.
 
Agreed. Dawn would have been better if they had did that & spent more time with kids her age on screen .
 
I always liked Dawn. When I started watching the show and could understand it, I was close to her age. Thats probably why.
 
It is no wonder Dawn would scream her opinions, just consider what Dawn once was then look at the nut job monks who formed her into a little bitty girl who wasn't allowed to wear high heels.

Yep, hated Dawn with a passion. Bratty, acting up, selfish, making bad choices.I get she's a teen and got angry for being treated like a baby and always being protected. She needed to grow up, respect Buffy for how she was handling and dealing with things since losing her mom. Dawn needed to take responsibility for her actions and what needed to be done by her on her end. Wether it be chores, decisions or following Buffy's advice.
 
I didn't dislike her. 😆

Like with Connor, my main issue with Dawn is that she's too often selfish. It can get incredibly annoying.
 
This person didn't care for the show after Dawn. She seemed to dislike Dawn for more what it did to the show. Given that she references other series I've seen brought up here more than once, I thought to throw it in the cauldron:

INTRO:

As soon as Michelle Trachtenberg appeared on screen as little sis to Buffy Summers in season 5, I denounced Joss Whedon as my spirit animal. I thought a sudden sister was a horrible device to use, and throughout the series I was reluctantly proved correct. The top five list below supports my opinions as to why Dawn didn’t work and murdered all plots in Buffy. I also wanted to see why Dawn was created, and finding an entrancing rumor as to why he ever thought this was a good idea.

Heh, I checked the brief follow up to find she kept watching, and later says the one playing Caleb saved the show. Just one reason while your mileage may vary with this.
 
Yes, the monks changed the green ball of energy to be (Dawn) a sister to Buffy, but I don't recall the monks causing Dawn's reaction to every situation as being part of the package.

The person who portrayed Caleb was able to direct his character to promote a new direction to the show: He and Buffy did a wonderful job of promoting that direction.
 
To be fair, Nathan Fillion did elevate the character of Caleb. Most of the time you would just hire some character actor whose acting credits are mostly things like "Homophobic Man #2," or "Elderly ER Patient #3" or "Deputy #4," or John Cullum's Non-Union Canadian stand in. N.F. took that role, played against type, and made a stupid character actually seem interesting. However, he was only in for five episodes, so I don't think he saved the show.
